Wanting to disciple a person but not knowing who to disciple can be a quandary for many Christ followers. They have the knowledge, the heart, and the time. But where is the person for them to pour into?
This does not have to be elusive. Below are some real examples from my life showing a variety of places I have met people to discipleship.

Over the past 25 years of ministry, I have heard one answer over and over and over. The question: What is your biggest roadblock in discipleship? What is the biggest roadblock to people pouring their life into another spiritually?

The answer: Time. I don’t have time. They don’t have time. I get it. As a mom of two busy sons with a full schedule of speaking engagements, writing deadlines, exercising, and errands, the sheer thought of trying to line my schedule up with somebody else’s is almost impossible … almost.

Around Easter time each year, believers in Christ all around the world reflect and consider the nail-pierced hands of Jesus probably more than any other time of the year. It’s a time that makes us think about His hands and feet pierced upon the cross for our iniquities.

However, the crucifixion accounts are not the only places where God’s hands are mentioned. Matter of fact, there are several verses, too many for even this article, that mention the hand of God.

For example, in Deuteronomy 3:24, we learn of the strength of God’s hand, “O Sovereign Lord, you have only begun to show your greatness and the strength of your hand to me, your servant…”

In Joshua 4:24, we read of his powerful hand, “He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the Lord’s hand is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God forever.”

It is easy to lose hope in prayer when we don’t feel as if our prayers matter. We wonder if they are even being heard; we wonder if we are praying correctly. We wonder if we are hindering our own prayers somehow. There could be temptations to throw up our hands and think, “Why bother?”

James 5:16 says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Do your prayers seem powerful and effective? In this two-part series, we will explore why our prayers are not as productive or powerful as we would like and what can be done about it.

Do your prayers seem powerful and effective? In part one of this series, I shared how many people do not feel their prayers are effective because they either do not think they can change God’s mind, or they are simply losing hope.

In part two of this series, we will explore two more reasons our prayers may not be as effective or powerful as we would hope.

Many people think that knowing God’s will for their lives is like shooting an arrow in the dark hoping they hit the target. We may even wish God would show up to us in dream or send a stranger to pick us out of a crowd and exclaim, “Thus says the Lord, you should do this!”

Seeking God’s will does not have to be that way! Jesus did not die on the cross and save you from your sins to leave you wandering and confused as to what you are supposed to do next. As a matter of fact, we actually have solid biblical principles to guide us in how to seek God’s will for our lives. Three principles to remember when seeking God’s will are: God reveals His will through His Word, His people and His voice.

God’s Eyes of Love

Did you know your eyes focus on 50 different objects every second and the only organ more complex than the eye is the brain?

Your eyes can distinguish approximately 10 million different colors and 80 percent of all learning comes through the eyes. The human eye is fascinating and Incredible but not supernatural. Only God has supernatural eyes. Able to see our hearts, our intentions, our potential and our destiny.

Sadly, in our fallen world, God sees a lot of awful things. His eyes see violence, hunger, fear and sickness. He sees unmet expectations, broken hearts and crushed dreams. He sees wasted potential and broken relationships. He sees needless destruction, forces of weather, nightmares and loss of hope. God’s eyes see all the destruction sin has wrecked upon our personal lives, the lives of our loved ones and the earth itself.

In the midst of all that, He sees you. He sees you doing your best as you walk out this human life. He sees your sacrifices, He watches you turn the other cheek, He sees you bite your tongue, He sees you take the high road, again. He sees you be humble when you could be prideful. He sees you be kind instead of judgmental. He sees when you are misunderstood. He sees the time you spend serving others when you could be home relaxing. He sees your tired feet and aching back. He sees.

“This is a lemon. It will take too much work. This is not your home.”

It was crushing to hear those words from a good friend as we were standing in another home I came so close to purchasing to be The Faith House. Months earlier, God had impressed upon my heart to open a women’s home in Waco, Texas, where I was currently on the staff of a Christian ministry. But things were unraveling, not moving forward and time was running out. We were days away from school starting with a commitment from eight ladies to live with me that year. And still, there was no place for us to lay our heads.

Was I totally delusional? Had I not really felt God had placed that dream in my heart? I had told people God had called me to believe for this. I had hired a realtor to help me find a home after raising $60,
000 in pledges to help either build or update a home. But nothing was working out.

Don't Sell Yourself Short

Many people sell themselves short in the discipleship arena. They will cite their personality drawbacks, their past mistakes, their age, or a stage of life they are in as justifications to not disciple. Let’s look closer at a couple of these hesitations toward discipleship to understand why they are truly unwarranted.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Everybody has a seat around the discipleship table. Every personality type is needed to be a discipler, because every personality type needs to be discipled! God is not looking to your outward personality to see if you can disciple others. He looks at your heart.

Many people want to pay it forward! They want to invest in another spiritually to show gratitude for the people who helped them in their walk with God. Getting in the boat with another person spiritually and helping them become grounded in the basics of the Christian faith is exactly what we are called to do.

I love how Paul said to Timothy, “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”
